And I'd like to subtract my voice from Ram's comments.
I'm unhappy that a very specific comment on the risibility of demanding that
poets wear suits is characterised as an "attack" and that rather one should
be praising such an institution. I haven't suggested that the event is
undemocratic. Though neither do I think that allowing a Cambridge professor
in necessarily makes it the opposite. Is this the shape of things to come?
Is even the mildest of criticisms of this project to be met with reminders
of all the work Ram is doing. That was never in question and I find any
suggestion that it was patronising. Part of me is feels that this is the
cheapest PR the UN is ever going to have, but that any attempt to suggest
this or compare it to other activities of the UN will result in more wrist
slapping.
