One comment, both as reviewer and reviewed. It is
important to keep in mind whom reviews are for. Not
for the reviewer; they are not a trampoline for
him/her to show off on, though they are too often so
used. Nor for the writer - I've heard writers complain
"it wasn't constructive; it didn't tell me what I
should be doing". Tough. That isn't the reviewer's job
either. They are for the reader; they need to tell
him/her roughly what sort of book it is and whether
he/she is likely to enjoy it. I thought Alison's did.
