In regards to Debbie Comerford's discussion of John Mateer's article: I
attended the Hope and Wright session at the Melb Writers festival. the
general consensus among the speakers was that Wright & Hope were good poets
who wrote a few great poems. this claim was met with resistance from some of
the audience members, including a teacher who argued that 'Woman to Man' is
always a winner in the classroom. if i recall correctly this rebuttal was
accompanied by vehement applause from some sections of the gallery. the
whole discussion was a fairly tame affair.
given that i only recently left high school, my most significant association
with Hope is witnessing the school chaplain drooling over 'The Death of The
Bird' before a bemused congregation.
cheers
