As for narrative, those
long, sublime, thoroughly elitist
epics of mine you
(almost alone) read and
prefer, Marty - what if
the feminists and
queer-theorists are right, that
story *per se*
implies violent
masculinist
imposition of meanings? Then I would never
write anything else, but let's be nice,
reabsorb
story into character
and character into
metaphor;
so that meaning may float
observing its effect,
while history appears
as a sheen on words -
like the blur of fans
and tailgaters smiling
amiably up
at the blimp passes.
