"The nature of melancholy"
to JK
Examine my discourse, understand
the nature and extent
of a state
which occurs in the perceived cavity
of a solitary being.
In particular, how did this insubstantial
and intangible revolution of the body, the soul,
narrowed to focus
a single disorder,
melancholy, for study.
Its composition and function,
intricate and complex
like the petals of a dandelion,
in his relationship to a butterfly,
and to a lesser extent,
to God.
Although strictly forbidden,
attachments exist,
whether the particular subject was
hate
or love.
Transitions from a being to another, in
this time of changeable weather,
shafts of light, tormented shifts
do occur, as from a material entity
to an ethereal soul
encased within a prison
of flesh,
from you, a man ordering the universe,
to me, a passing cloud.
I did not fade entirely. In fact,
my vague presence demonstrates that,
in many respects, attachments persist, inevitable.
No cure
for a sound mind in a sound body,
subject to a condition
which could be treated by a whisper, a change
in the color of the sky, by a fading memory,
no longer linear, logic, to which
despite the rain, the wind,
you wished to stay attached
like a butterfly to the heart of a dandelion.
