Dear etc
It's ironic when you think about it but
my previous employers Black Pepper
are kind enough to still give me freebie
editorial copies of those titles I worked
upon as book editor or co-editor though
I'm no longer an employee of the press -
one of those I've just received quotes me
on the cover too. Don't tell anyone but the
quote is actually from a 'Presentation and
Promotion' Australia Council grant application
where I was arguing (anonymously of course)
for the Literature Fund to subsidise publication
of Philip Hammial's excellent collection BREAD.
Not only were we awarded the publishing subsidy
(one of may successful grant applications I've
made to the Aust. Council - contra Cordite 3 -
though none have been successful for myself)
but the publishers (after I left) thought the prose
quotable enough for blurb -
'Like all good Surrealists Hammial is at heart
a serious poet, whose shimmering surfaces
open out to social analysis and an
engagement with culture and politics,
resulting in dazzling bravura poetry.'
- Hugh Tolhurst
It's a glorious looking book too, bearing as
cover illustration the Philip Hammial sculpture,
'A Postmodernist Watching The Shit Hit The Fan'.
They've not mentioned the release date, and it may
be delayed as Mr Hammial is at the World Festival
of Poetry in Tokyo.
