How about the contents of the definitive anthology for such a 'student'? It
must have been attempted, like the old 'Jazz for People Who Hate Jazz' and
such like. Let's give it a limit of twenty poems and attempt a (imaginary)
PoetryEtc Website anthology.

I tried it, but my selection was just too predictable - a lot of classic,
medium-length poems from the metaphysicals, romantics and moderns. Only one
woman amongst them, Emily Dickinson. I'd like to be more daring, but the
20-poem limit makes it difficult: Do I leave out Kubla Khan, Ode to a
Nightingale, Prufrock etc? And long poems would presumably be a problem, as
they always are for anthologists - any collection of my *favourite* poems
would have to include Briggflatts, The Waste Land, Notes Toward a Supreme
Fiction, as well as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and The Ancient Mariner.
Just about impossible, for me anyway.
Best wishes
Matthew
