There was a very interesting an article that appeared in the New York Times
Magazine within the last two years, that told the story of Carver's
relationship
to his editor at Knopf, Gordon Lish (also a fiction writer). Lish edited
liberally
many of the stories Carver is known for...in fact it could almost be said
that
Lish "co-authored" many of the early stories in terms of the large cuts he
made
and his suggested re-writes being taken verbatim by Carver. Later, after
Carver became famous, Lish's work on Carver's fiction was resented somewhat
by
Carver and by Carver's wife, the poet Tess Gallagher.
