This discussion reminds me of MacNeice's "Elegy for Minor Poets".
LM talks about those "who knew all the words but failed to achieve
the Word", and treats them with a mixture of sympathy and derision
("those opinions which rank them high are based/On a wish to be
different or on lack of taste").
It's a poem that has always amused me -- I trust I haven't over-quoted;
MacNeice ain't out of copyright yet...
