On what level is it important for us to be told that
the chair has been "borrowed", and why "simply"?

I have no trouble with the stew / soup line. I like Ally's suggestion that
there is a double meaning there, and I can also picture the lovers craning
in the way that one does in restaurants (well, I do) to see what exactly
he's eating. But the line about the borrowed chair bothers me - it really
doesn't seem very important, and my first thought was that it was a bit of
padding, there for the rhyme etc.
Best wishes
Matthew
