'Work is love made visible.' A marvellous statement. Alison, I like the
way you've related it to being a mother and the reciprocity that feeds in
from the child and again, the dignity that follows from any work's being
done well. If Walker's statement were carried into effect throughout
society, then poetry, like parenting, largely a labour of love - inasmuch
as the monetary rewards are few, would be seen (not just by those
practising the work) as intrinsically valuable and making a vast
contribution to society. Poetry and parenting are two highly valued human
activities (everything's relative) - but not highly enough.
Another thing that's occurred to me re Walker's statement. When people
work without liking/loving their job, it's very visible. Take teaching, for
example.
