Peter,
i'm going to go against the general trend and say the poem needs the 5th
stanza. without it, i just can't see a consistent theme running through the
piece, and i think the first two lines of the last stanza hint at the poem's
concern with perspective; the poet observing his means of observation. the
notion of poet as potential killer should not be the be-all-and-end-all of
what is, i think, an otherwise beautifully simple piece. certainly, we can
read the 4th stanza with this theme in mind, but for me, the introduction of
such a theme speaks for the diverse layers of perspective/intuition the poet
employs.
