Poetry contests in the U.S. have a bad reputation because so many of them
are scams. Some unscrupulous person will advertise a "poetry contest"
requiring a hefty application fee and promising that the winners will be
published. The fees sent in by numerous desperate unpublished poets are
used to print off a cheap edition of the least awful poems which is sent to
the "winners", with all the fees minus the minor expenses for printing and
postage being pocketed as profit. I understand that in Britain and other
countries poetry contests are usually more legitimate.
Personally I would never dream of paying a poetry contest application fee
on principle. I don't pay for love, and I don't pay for readers.
