Having worked in the early seventies with the Australian composer Anne
Boyd, I would say ... none.
Which might be unfair to Anne, but in my experience, librettists count
somewhere below those who sweep out the stalls in the theatre.
The first I knew that an opera for which I'd written the libretto had been
performed as part of the Opening Festival Season of the Sidney Opera House
(Annex?) was when someone stopped me in the street (in Glasgow), later
followed by an interesting (?!) exchange of letters with Faber (Music)
[ltd.] to establish my title to be the author of the said libretto.
"One time, some time, never again old chug" (Tom Paulin somewhere in the
liberty tree).
MUCH better to work with visual artists IMHO ...
