In the OUP thread Roddy reiterated his belief that any poet with talent will
be able to make her / his mark in almost any state of the publishing world.
I've never believed this myself. The ability to barge down doors has never
seemed to me to say much about literary talent, only about charm,
initiative, determination, thickskinnedness etc. I can think of gifted poets
who have been trying for years without getting anywhere, and of course we
can all think of some without gifts who've gone a long way (though we may
not necessarily agree who they are). It would not surprise me in the least
if the best poet now writing turned out to be someone none of us have heard
of. Remember Emily Dickinson.
Best wishes
Matthew Francis
