| The trouble is that this sort of argument is generally invoked to bring
| simple-minded politics into poetry - or to justify political rant by poets
| with small knowledge of the real world.
I worry about this, George. I went back to the posting to which you are
responding and could not see any attempt "to bring simple-minded politics
into poetry" so I am not sure that you are actually answering Dean's
argument. As to *yours, it's difficult to know what you mean because you
give no examples
| Why, when politics is brought into poetical discussion, does it always
seem

Well, it doesn't seem so me. I think that deals with that argument.

intelligence,

Interesting list. It acronyms to tide, a rather mucky thing nowadays.
Toleration and democracy have limits or should have, or they implode. I E
intelligence and empathy will surely provide... But, leaving aside such
essential quibbles I get a lot of tide from Brecht
