Dear Jon Corelis,
I may have gotten Freud wrong, but I think I was just
unclear. That's what I get for using a piece of
post-modern jargon like "privileges." So: in Civ. &
Dis. as I read it, repression is almost a force of
nature, or at least the result of an immutable law
once human beings enter into civilization. At the end
of his essay, Freud names the arts and sciences as the
creative products of human discontent. Most of Freud,
in my opinion, is scientistic non-sense, but I have
always been attracted to the tragic myth he creates in
this book.
