At a reading in Perth one night, I started hyperventilating.
My hands and lips went numb and I thought I was going
to faint. I had to stop and sit down. I couldn't find
a paper bag anywhere. A cold beer helped somewhat. Those
were the days when panic attacks were common as breathing,
and breathing properly wasn't my strong point. Then someone
showed me a wonderful technique for slowing the heartrate
naturally. This works: place the first two fingers of your
left hand over the top of your right wrist. The middle
finger must be behind (arm-side) of the wrist bone. Now,
using the tip of the first finger, with firm pressure,
make small, SLOW circles there. It's a pressure point.
Do this until you feel things calming down. I use this
technique before every reading now. It's wonderful. Oh,
the cold beer is still definitely part of it all.
best
Anthony
