I take it as a common courtesy to ask the permission of a backchanneller
before taking their message front channel or even referring to it.
What I had to say backchannel I didn't think was all that interesting to
the group at large and was really directed specifically to you. I was
concerned, after the recent flame wars, about a tone I thought I detected,
perhaps only because I was oversensitive to the possibility, in your
previous, and I thought I might be able to lower the heat. I recently took
another discussion backchannel because I suspected, rightly, that I was
about to become the object of flaming and I saw no reason to subject
everyone else to it, particularly in the list's recent mood.
I've also had backchannel discussions with list members who have become
friends. On occasion ideas related to a list topic develop in ways that
they wouldn't have in the environment of the list at large and then are
brought back to the list.
You've just announced that no one should backchannel you unless they wish
to be outed as having done so.
It's really a question of decorum, isn't it?
>In your apology you mention you were taken up with back channel comments,
>which is something else I've got beef about. BCing is Ok but on this list
>already I've had 2 examples of the strategic BC which I neither like nor
>understand. Yesterday Mark announced to the list like Jacques Cousteau
