i tend at times to use various forms which avoid the usual left margin.
despite recent list harrumphings about centered work i feel that it is
often appropriate that certain poems release their grip on the left
margin and move out into the openness of the midfield [bearing in mind
the offside rule of course].
on the other hand, it's a pity so many people are unaware of or see
ugliness in the formatting possibilities inherent in the use of
non-proportional fonts for reading email [the only means we have for
sharing layout].
when douglas claims he can no longer write poetry [and given some of
his recent efforts, and bearing in mind his customary terse style in
online fora] i wonder if he would not sometimes find a [complementary]
playful, visual form more liberating than the stanza which depends on
the left margin and a longish line.
as for an example of my use of such forms, here is a visual poem which
is part of a web work:
