According to John Shoptaw, Ashes was Frank O'Hara's
nickname for Ashbery. We were discussing the book April
Galleons, where Ashbery at one point (can't remember
which one)alludes to this nickname, acording to Mr
Shoptaw. Cos of time constraints I have to write my
postings to this e group very quickly, and I guess
things get a bit stream of consciousness -y (how's
that last word for horribly casual?)
"You mentioned Bruce Andews...do you call him
"Brews"? "
How about the Aussie (oops, sorry, Australian) form,
'Brucie'?

Do you like/see if you like Fragment (ignore the
title, it's a long one)or Europe or the Skaters. These
are all fairly 'charted' offerings.

Scott,
I realize email communication is very informal, but
I was wondering if the moniker "Ashes"
was your own creation...or is that what all Ashbery's
friends call him? It comes off somewhat
superciliously.
You mentioned Bruce Andews...do you call him
"Brews"?
More to the point, I like your simile about
"feasting on whipped cream," but for me the experience
is more like swimming (while trying not to drown from
boredom) in someone's mind soup. I just don't
have the stamina or the appetite for Ashbery's longer
offerings. I admire those who have the inclination
(& the time) to make it through poems constructed
of endless musings and divagations. But I have the
bad habit of wanting more purpose and structure
(more chart and less flow) in longer works.

"Why is it not possible for me to doubt that I have never been on the moon? And how
could I try to doubt it? First and foremost, the supposition that perhaps I have
been there would strike me as idle. Nothing would follow from it, nothing be
explained by it. It would not tie in with anything in my life... Philosophical
problems occur when language goes on holiday. We must not separate ideas from life,
we must not be misled by the appearances of sentences: we must investigate the
application of words in individual language-games" - Ludwig Wittgenstein
