I am just back from a marvellous family weekend, where I nearly fell
in love with a blonde astrophysicist, and having spent four hours in
the pub this afternoon noticed somebody mentioning Ashbery.
He has two poems in the new LRB which I am not keen to read. He strikes
me as a `carpet poet'. REading his verse is like struggling through a
headful of gunge. I debate whether he is really a poet at all.
But then I didnt read his work before he got famous. I prefer
Frank O'Hara who can be the most enjoyable fun and can write a poem.
