In the interests of accuracy, I'd better point out that Sheenagh Pugh is not
a little old lady. What she is is a nice person and exceptionally gifted
poet with a habit of expressing herself rather forcefully in conversation.
Which, although we don't know each other so well, is pretty much what I
think of you, Roddy. If you met, far from descending to fisticuffs, you
would probably get on extremely well. What's happened is that you've
misinterpreted each other's tone in a way that often happens in emails, and
things have escalated from there.
Has anyone noticed that these spats tend to happen in the academic holidays?
I remember a particularly fierce one this time last year, which was
generally blamed on the heat in North America. I think it's simply down to
the increased traffic - postings up to - what is it? - 50 or 60 a day.
Everybody communicates more and gets more excitable.
Can I suggest that we all calm things down and refrain from name-calling?
And I also don't think it's a good idea to go in for lengthy post-mortems on
the lines of what-exactly-did-you-mean-by >>>? In fact the best thing to do
is forget it. Which presumably Sheenagh will do as she's going on holiday.
Best wishes
Matthew
