Jeez - Am I growing old, or what? Counting Crows considered "MOR bar-rock
blues"? Adam Duritz (dread locks aside) has a marvellous voice. Wrote two
years or so ago to my old Perth mate, Murray Jennings, saying: "Here's a
band you should listen to - echoes of Bob Dylan and The Band". First album's
"Mr Jones" recalls Bob Dylan's track of similar title (on "Highway 61
Revisited" or was it "Blonde on Blonde"? Too lazy to drag out the LPs/CDs to
check) - particularly the line: "I want to be Bob Dylan". Dead giveaway,
right? And how does it go: "She's looking at you: no, she's looking at me".
Also great tracks on 2nd album.
There has been previous debate on this list on the question of "poetry" vs.
"lyrics". So, now that I've got my computer up and working again, I'm going
to "stir the pot": when it comes to "performance poetry" and "song lyrics",
I think that the likes of Tom Waits (etc. etc. - add your own preference
here - Neil Young? Jackson Browne? John Lee Hooker? Chuck Berry?!!) piss on
performance poetry from a very great height - well, any performance poetry
session I've ever attended.
Closing here, having found the Counting Crows 2nd "recovering the
satellites". Yo! Go, go, go! In the JVK Pogo!
