Yes, Heiner Muller is someone I return to again and again... He did a
play called GERMANIA DEATH IN BERLIN, which is not an adaptation but a
"synthetic fragment" which addresses East Germany (then). Because he was
so obsessed by Germany, Tactitus' text is a constant reference point, as
it is in Anselm Kiefer's work, for instance.
Germania is the title of a little book by semiotext(e), which contains a
mishmash of essays, poems, bits of plays and interviews. Highly
recommended, it's very interesting, and often very funny. And sometimes
very bleak indeed.
