I have to agree with Coral - and Alison. 'Small' is not the half of it in
the world of Oz poetry. Perhaps people don't understand what the word
criticism means. Who of us is so perfect that a word or so which might
indicate there's something that might, just might, need to be looked at
again, wouldn't go astray?
But I've heard more than a few stories of how the great ones of Australian
poetry have gone into an absolute tizz over the tiniest whisper of
'criticism'. The rest of us wear it. Then, I'd rather be criticised than
ignored. But, as Coral said, some us do have a life. I try to avoid 'the
scene' as much as possible these days. It only does your head in, as they
say in the classics. I'd rather write.
The standard of reviewing in this country is, of course, a vexing issue. But
then, maybe like attracts like. Just a thought.
Cheers,
Jill
