To Oneself
(Giacomo Leopardi)
Now you will rest for ever,
tired heart of mine. The last deception
has perished since I believed
myself eternal. It has perished. Well do I feel it,
in us has been extinguished not only hope, but the desire.
Rest for ever. Much
have you laboured. Nothing repays
your stirring, nor does the earth is
worth of sighs. Life is bitterness and tedium,
never anything else; and mud
is the world.
Be quietened now. Despair
for the last time. To human kind
fate has only appointed dying. Nature
scorn now, the brutal
power which hidden governs to universal hurt,
and the infinite vanity of everything.

A se stesso
Or poserai per sempre,
stanco mio cor. Peri' l'inganno estremo,
ch'eterno io mi credei. Peri'. Ben sento,
in noi di cari inganni,
non che la speme, il desiderio e' spento.
Posa per sempre. Assai
palpitasti. Non val cosa nessuna i moto tuoi, ne'di sospiri e' degna
la terra. Amaro e noia
la vita, altro mai nulla; e fango e' il mondo.
T'acquieta omai. Dispera
l'ultima volta. Al gener nostro il fato
non dono' che il morire. Omai disprezza
te, la natura, il brutto
poter, che, ascoso, a comun danno impera,
e l'infinita vanita' del tutto.
