Favorite proverbs of mine:
Truth comes from the stranger. - Iranian
Don't hop on the big chariot, you will only make yourself silly. -
Mandarin
Historical note: the true origin of the saying, "When I hear the word
culture, I reach for my revolver," which has been attributed to everyone
from Stalin to Goering, was a play called Schlageter, by Hans Johst,
widely performed in Germany early in the Nazi regime. It concerned one
Albert Leo Schlageter who died fighting the French occupiers of the Ruhr
in the early 20s and became a Nazi martyr. In the play, Schlageter
expresses his hatred of intellectuals by saying "When I hear the word
'Kultur,' I release the safety-catch on my Browning."
