Oh dear. Mairead's poem, which I thought was great, didn't come through to
me in anything like the way it sounds as though it did to Candice. What is
the e-mail using us for? (as W S Graham might have said - & whatever would
he have made of it at all?).
I liked that Yoruba proverb, Candice. Wish I had a proverbial dictionary
handy. Here's a Basque one, from memory:
"Cover the fires of the house with the ashes of the house"
(aka 'don't wash your dirty linen in public'). The house or 'etxea' is a
central concept for Basque identity, with dozens of common surnames being
formed from it. The 'etxekandere' or spiritual head of the household is a
woman who looks after blessings and prayers for all house members wherever
they are, living or dead. (see Mark Kurlansky's fine book "The Basque
History of the World")
