I gather from the description given that the email was anonymous.
If that's the case, my own reaction would be to ignore it no matter
what it said. I never respond to anonymous or pseudonymous email
anywhere, including on this list (unless it's some purely
administrative matter, like dealing with automated bug reports).
But apart from that, I find such a request out of line in itself.
If someone wrote me without previous acquaintance saying they had
become interested in my published writing and wanted to correspond,
I would reply. And if later that person wanted to consult me on
writing about my work, I'd probably agree to. But for someone to
write out of the blue saying, "Hey, help me with my term paper"
strikes me as quite rude.
Of course, you could just forget all these considerations and
have some fun: "Weighing the Air is meant to express my vision of
the world as a chip buttie. The Motorist was written in an attempt
to persuade a member of the clergy to engage in oral sex with me.
I didn't actually write Cat in Hell's myself but copied it out of a
neighborhood newspaper someone had left lying on the floor of the
local pub's gents, so I can't tell you what it means ..."
