Dear Alison
You asked two direct questions of me
today, here are two answers:-
1.
>Q: Do Imean Long Legged Fly is an Irish Fascist Marching Song?
> A: No, but 'Long-Legged Fly' is pro-caesar, pro-ubermensh and
In my edition of Yeats it comes after "Three Marching Songs".
Q: Idon't know what you
> mean by "the silences"; but it seems a little easy to condemn poets for
> what they don't write, rather than examining what they _do_.
A: Fredric Jameson's The Political Unconscious tends to argue that
beyond the silences in a text, the unconscious politics can also be found
where the text gives glimpse of its/the author's idea of utopia. With Yeats
these utopian moments don't seem Republican or democratic.
Please don't assume the positions of others which disagree
with your estimation of a given poet, are necessarily badly
thought out. I'm happy to agree to disagree re William Butler
Yeats. My grandmother and father loved him, I don't.
best
Hugh
