Dear Thomas,
I cannot disagree with you that the two "turn out to be entirely different
pieces" both because I haven't seen the print version and I don't know your
criteria; but I suggest that this need not be a general rule i.e. that
"entirely" would not always apply
There will be difference and I think it cuts in when one stresses the visual
element of the poem rather than treating what is on the page as something to
read from or as a medium for silent reading. In other words I think the
difference is inherent in making visual poetry, whatever that is.
In emphasising the visual element, one not only moves towards the
possibility of notating potential voice and action arising from what is on
the page, but one moves along that visual line, producing visual elements
which are somewhat autonomous of the uttered elements. (I'm not saying this
very well. I'm thinking as I write.) Similarly, the constraints and
potentials of web versions and paper versions differ. I have a paper version
(house press, canada) and a web version (Riding the Meridian 2) of my poem
"House"... But they are *versions and so perhaps not entirely different.
Last month, I performed _Bucking Curtains_ with the late Alaric Sumner, his
last performance I think. A lot of what we did was implicit in his text but
not always explicit. With such improvisations, each performance will be a
version... In the same performance, I performed my "Games on a phrase" and
afterwards Alaric commented on the degree to which it varied from an earlier
performance (without an audience, on to tape - also on Riding the Meridian
2)
In answer to your specific point, this is something I would like very much
to investigate further by practice...
All the best
Lawrence

| Since you bring up the issues Douglas, it might be an appropriate place
| for me to post information about something I have been working on since
| I did a paper version of one of my pieces, 'Listening to rain'
| (http://sites.netscape.net/trbell/RepoRepro/listenan.htm) The web
| version has animated gifs and the print version is 15 double-sided
| pages, and they turn out to be entirely different pieces. even though
| the web version can obviously be downloaded free, I'm selling the print
| version for $2.50 ppd for those interested in making the comparison.
| I'm aso thinking about the merits of doing a web/print journal and
| publishing others' work the same way so i'm interested in hearing from
| others who might want to go this way. A few other visual poets have
| started to do the same.
