There is a Gaelic superstition still associated with Seamus Heaney's
ancestral home in County Derry
in Northern Ireland. According to Heaney, a St. Muredach O'Heney once
presided over a monastic site affiliated with his family.
Muredach (Irish National feast – 12 August: St Muredach) was an "old man",
perhaps a presbyter or priest, in Saint Patrick's household. At the
conclusion of his mission to the West Patrick left his companion to be
bishop in W. Sligo and Mayo. One tradition says that at the end of his life
he went to live as a hermit on the island of Innishmurray.
