Perhaps it is not politics and poetry that lead to
dead ends--the two often seem inseparable to me--but a
discourse based on confrontation and an intolerant
response to others' ideas.
There is though a quality of language peculiar to
politics that is anathema to poetry--the dead, brittle
language of bureaucracy or advertising and
totalitarianism, used cynically to avoid
responsibility; poetic language breaks up the calculus
of such language and thus has a political function
always.
