You really have problems with the good ol' metaphor,
don't you? So did Larkin, of course. The point I was
making is that you seem, whenever your position and
pseudo-authority as a literary 'gatekeeper' is
challenged, to get all nasty, instead of getting all
disputatious. For body odour read "the obnoxious
manner with which you respond to challenges to your
authority." Sue whatever her name is seems to have
made a few points, I don't know how valid cos I didn't
read em properly, and you respond with abuse. You had
no right to bully her, when all she was asking for was
an argument, and she is justified in calling you a
"snob", just as you were unjustified in calling me
an"asshole" when I queried the foundations of the
standards you employ as an editor and as a participant
on this newsgroup.
Now go away and come back with some arguments to
support your prejudices.

Hey, Hamilton, as far as I'm concerned you're a
Stalinist pimple & unless you've snuck
into my house & sniffed my shorts I don't think you
know what I smell like. But I can
smell your kind a mile away. Your last goes over the
line of ad hominim attack. I
suggest you read the rules of the list & issue an
apology. Stop it.

"Why is it not possible for me to doubt that I have never been on the moon? And how
could I try to doubt it? First and foremost, the supposition that perhaps I have
been there would strike me as idle. Nothing would follow from it, nothing be
explained by it. It would not tie in with anything in my life... Philosophical
problems occur when language goes on holiday. We must not separate ideas from life,
we must not be misled by the appearances of sentences: we must investigate the
application of words in individual language-games" - Ludwig Wittgenstein
