 The Unbearable Lightness of Being

 4 - 5 th November, 2000
 Brathay Hall, Ambleside, Cumbria.

In recent years we have seen core developments in the progression of adventure
/ wilderness therapy. This is highlighted in two International Adventure Therapy
Conferences, in 1997 (Australia) and 2000 (Germany). There is also a growing
interest in the development of therapeutic applications of outdoor adventure
within the UK. In order to support the development of ethical and quality practice
in adventure therapy there is a need to bring interested practitioners of adventure
therapy together, in order to begin to identify the complexities
of providing such an approach. An initial starting point to create the development
of such practice is the provision of workshops which provide a specific focus
on aspects of theory and practice in adventure / wilderness therapy. Buckinghamshire

Chilterns University College and Brathay Hall Trust are, therefore, glad to
support such developments with the hosting of a wilderness therapy workshop
by Paul Stolz of Australia.

Paul Stolz Bth, Mth is a Family Therapist and Narrative Therapist and Churchill
Fellow 2000. He has worked in the field of Wilderness Therapy for eight years
and has written a number of articles in the field and made numerous presentations

at Adventure Therapy Conferences, Outdoor Education Conferences and Family Therapy
Conferences, all to do with wilderness based therapeutic intervention.

Paul will provide a weekend residential workshop titled, the 'Unbearable Lightness
of Being', examining, both in theoretical and practical ways, the simplicity
and complexities of the Wilderness Enhanced Model of therapeutic intervention.

The workshop will examine the cultural and political context of wilderness-based
therapeutic intervention, and discuss the process of Narrative Therapy and its
implications for the use of power in Wilderness Therapy. This model of therapeutic

intervention emphasizes, "the construct of metaphor or story in the lives of
the client, whereby they are given freedom to construct another story which
will enable them to replace what is largely a negative story" (Stolz, 2000.4).
Themes such as discourse of power and knowledge, change processes, therapeutic

models and comparison between modernist and postmodernist approaches will be
discussed.

The practical scenarios will interlink seamlessly with the philosophy of the
phenomenologists and postmodernism to construct an unbearable lightness of being
that will be carried from the workshop long after its completion.

The theoretical and practical dimensions of applying narrative therapy to a
wilderness therapy model will open up a wide range of debates relevant to wider
provisions of the outdoor adventure experience. This workshop will, therefore,
be of interest for practitioners from diverse professional backgrounds, including

outdoor educators, developmental trainers and therapists. It is hoped that
the diverse background of participants will continue the exchange of debate
and thinking, which is required, for future developments of adventure therapy
in the UK.
