Jack--
I agree wholeheartedly with your last paragraph inviting the unique
combination of the physicality of adventure with the psych-ality of therapy
and the spirituality of religion. A colleague of mine and I used to teach a
January Interim course in which we did exactly that--it was very powerful.
In reflecting back upon that experience now, one of the things that I believe
the combination provokes is powerful images--images that have sound, color,
vibration, smell--the images get locked into our cells. Ritual is
provocative along these same lines. And Images compel.
I think one of the most powerful tools we have for assisting this process is
our ability to carefully create metaphors prior to the experience and then
carefully craft our questions during the processing. The imagery we help to
create is very powerful. So powerful that we must be very careful to do all
of this consciously--for we can easily misdirect the imagery through sloppy
language.
Angeles Arrien, a cross-cultural anthropologist studied indigenous cultures
around the world wrote a wonderful book which provides lots of metaphors,
symbols, experiences, etc., to guide one's journey. She discovered
remarkable similarity between all the cultures. The book is entitled, THE
FOUR-FOLD WAY.
