AIM OF ESM2000
=========================================================================
ESM2000 is the international conference concerned with state of the art technology in modelling and
simulation. For several years, ESM has proven to be an outstanding forum for researchers involved in building
innovative simulation Systems, simulation and modelling tools and applications on both the research and
industrial front. The SCS European Simulation Multiconference features an outstanding technicall program
ranging from introductory tutorials to software reviews to state-of-the-art research and practice. The conference
includes exhibits, business meetings for professional societies, software user groups, and a social program for
spouses. All submissions will be peer reviewed by three members of the International Program Committee.
Accepted papers will be published in the conference Proceedings (both print and CD), that will be copyrighted
and widely disseminated.. All talks and tutorials must be accompanied by a paper of between three to eight
Proceedings pages. Contributions to the technical program are solicited in the following general areas, although
papers in any area of discrete-event and combined discrete-event and continuous simulation will be considered:

VENUE: GENT, BELGIUM
=========================================================================
The City of Gent (Ghent) has a long tradition, which is reflected in its buildings, roads and culinary offerings.
It was founded in 902 at the confluence of two main rivers: the Scheldt and the Lys, by monks, who established
a monastery, whose remains can still be seen today. A castle was erected in the 11th Century by the ruling
Count, in the center of the city. The Gravensteen (Castle of the Counts), as it is called, is well worth visiting.
Finally, the City is most reknown as the birth place of Emperor Charles V, or Carlo Quinto, in 1500. The City
will finalize in June 2000 a year of celebration to comemmorate this event. It must be pointed out however that
for the true Gent Citizens the celebration was with mixed feelings, as Charles V brutally suppressed a riot
against his high taxes by hanging the City’s council members. This gave rise to the nickname for the Gent
citizens: the “Stroppendragers” (bearers of the noose, i.e. the hanging rope).
Today the city blends a wonderful historic center, with many original buildings, surrounded by small canals,
with a vibrant university town. This makes it a wonderful place to visit and experience. So we all invite you
hartily to come and enjoy your stay with us!
The University of Gent is the second largest university in Belgium, with some 22.000 students across 10
Faculties. It has cutting-edge research in bio-engineering for plants, as well as in DNA research for human
medicine. Its Engineering Faculty is widely known for its broad education, making its engineers sought after in
the whole world. It has also worldwide reknown as the birthplace of pre-stressed concrete beams and in area’s
like chemical process engineering and human bloodflow modelling.
The Conference takes place at the Unviersity of Ghent, Faculty of Agriculture. It is easily accessible from the
hotels by a 5 minute walk.

TRAVELLING TO GENT
=========================================================================
For more details, inspect the Conference Website.
Gent is about 300 km’s from Paris (FR), 200 km from Amsterdam (NL) and 350 km from Köln (G).
BY AIR
Regular flights are available into Brussels Airport at Zaventem, or to a lesser degree, into Antwerp and Ostend
Regional Airport. From Brussels Airport Terminal, a direct InterCity (IC) train link with Gent is operational
each hour. Moreover, there are regular trains into Brussels South Station (Zuid of Midi), that contains excellent
train links with Ghent. The distance is about 50 km. Taxis can be expensive (about 4.500 fr for the trip to
Gent).
BY RAIL
The Ghent Train Station “Gent St. Pieters” is served extensively by any train passing between Brussels or
Antwerp and the Belgian coast (Oostende, Blankenberge, De Panne, Knokke). Moreover, there are direct TGV
connections twice daily with the French (Thalys) and UK network (Eurostar).
>From the station, multiple electric trams (nr 4) and busses run in to the city center, and taxis are readily
available.
BY CAR
Gent lies at the crossroads between the E17 motorway (Lille (FR) - Gent - Antwerp - Breda(NL)) and the E40
motorway (Calais (Fr) - Gent - Brussels - Aachen (G)). Follow the signs into the City Centre (“Centrum”).
Gent has a car-restriction policy in the city center with sattelite parking lots around it, making navigating very
complicated (to explain mainly). We provide detailed directions to the hotel locations, and the nearest city
parking.
SOCIAL PROGRAMME
On the evening before the conference there will be a Get Together Party at the University, from 18.00 hr until
20.00 hr with snacks and beverages. The conference desk will be open.
First Day program:
Opening address by the Rector or Vice-Rector in the Aula, Volderstraat (5 min from the Faculty)
