Dear Colleagues,
There is a really useful review of the literature on interventions
designed to reduce work related stress:
Organizational interventions to reduce work stress: are they
effective
Prepared by the University of Oxford for the HSE (Research report
193/19989)
The conclusion of this report is that the published work reviewed
does not present a convincing picture of the value of organizationl
interventions. The papers are critisised for : difficult to interpret,
causally ambiguous, inconsistent, based on small sample sizes
and/or statistically non-significant findings.
So its OK to audit and show that organisations do have problems,
but it is much more difficult to advise them on what might be an
effective strategy to tackle the problem when there is little or no
evidence of the strategies commonly adopted being effective when
evaluated in a rigorous manner.
