Hello everyone.
You may remember that a few weeks ago I sent the following E-mail message to
this list....

I just wanted to say thank you to all of those who got in touch with
me, suggested references or suggested people to get in contact with.
>From the engineering geology/applied geomorphology side of things, the general
concensus of opinion seems to be that when trying to "measure" the intensity or
magnitude of a landslide event: -
1. it depends on whether you are measuring the actual event or relying on whats
been left behind.
2. you can use the observed damage caused to buildings (particularly useful for
slow moving landslides) - of course this relies on there actually being
buildings there in the first place, how they are constructed and their age.
3. the energy released by the moving debris mass - I imagine being reliant on
instrumentation being in place beforehand.
4. there are also the statistics such as the volume of material involved,
estimated or measured speed of movement, etc.
I was asked a couple of times to give out the reference that I quoted above:
Alexander, D (1993) Natural Disasters, University College London (UCL) Press
ISBN 1-85728-094-6, p.35.
Thanks once again.
Andy
