Ph. D. Positions available!
Two Ph. D. positions are available in the group of PD Dr. Ingo Fischer at
the chemistry department of the ETH Zuerich (Swiss Federal Institute of
Technology) in the general area of gas-phase laser chemistry.
The work can be carried out working on either of the following two
projects:
(1) Photochemistry of biomolecules and hydrogen-bonded clusters. We
currently investigate intracluster reactions, like excited-state proton-
or electron transfer in large molecules embedded in solvent clusters.
Future works will focus on the excited-state dynamics of DNA base-pairs,
DNA bases surrounded by water and intermediates important in DNA repair.
The experiments will be carried out predominately by time-resolved
spectroscopy.
(2) Spectroscopy and photochemistry of organic radicals. We focus on
unimolecular reactions of organic radicals that are important in combustion
chemistry, in particular in soot formation. The goals are the
identification of the reaction products, determination of the time scales
and elucidation of the reaction mechanism. Earlier work focussed on H-atom
loss, future work will be concerned with the competition between H-atom
and methyl loss. We also plan to study photoinitiated reactions in van
der Waals dimers, leading to the formation of radicals. We apply time-
resolved spectroscopy, photofragment Doppler spectroscopy and high
resolution photoelectron spectroscopy in this project.
Modern state-of-the art equipment is available in our labs, including a
two-color, fully tunable all-solid state 2 ps laser system, nanosecond
OPO and dye laser systems, as well as time-of-flight mass and photoelectron
spectrometer. All experiments are in working conditions and yield results.
The ETH Zuerich chemistry department is one of the worlds prime research
institutions, offering excellent working conditions and technical support.
