Don't know the Kupferbergwerk Fischbach, but a little digging on the web turned
up the following listing:
http://www.kulturland.rlp.de/
The webpage is for the "Kulturland Rheinland-Pfalz". Searching the site for
"Fischbach", I got the following listing:
01.01.2000 - 31.12.2000 , 10:00 Uhr [hence, daily guided tours, it seems]
KUPFERBERGWERK FISCHBACH
Geschichte/Landeskunde
Eintritt: 4-6 DM
Kontakt: Kupferbergwerk Fischbach
Veranstaltungsort: Kupferbergwerk Fischbach
06784-2304
Fischbach
Hunsrück / Nahe
So it appears that the Fischbach is indeed open and can be visited. Hope this
helps, David Connolly

> Can anyone tell me if the Fischbach Kupferbergwerke, near Idar Oberstein in
Germany, is still open as a visitor mine? Secondly, can anyone recommend any
publication (pref in English but not essential) on its history, geology, layout,
etc., including photographs? I've got an old copy of the visitor guide but it's
very limited. Thanks in advance.

> On superstitions about women and mines - I know of an underground worker in
the north-east of England who to this day regards it as a seriously bad omen if
his path is crossed by a woman on his way to the pit, and who will take a really
circuitous route to minimise the chances. It's not the first time I've heard of
this superstition. However, a colleague has just flippantly suggested that he
maybe has an extremely jealous wife ..........
