Hi everyone,
I am new to the group…I was a gypo miner for 16 years and worked in deep
hardrock mines in Arizona, Nevada, Montana, South Dakota and north Idaho's
"Silver Valley," as well.
If you'll bear with me here for a moment, I am trying to make a point… I was
hurt in an underground accident in 1988, in north Idaho's Lucky Friday mine,
that left me unable to work anymore. Then, as a long forgotten interest, I
began writing-about the lives of miners. At first with only weekly columns
in local newspapers, but then for magazines: Rock and Gem, International
California Mining Journal, Gold and Treasure Hunter, GPAA and so on. Then in
1994 my first book Fire in The Hole, The Untold Story of Hardrock Miners was
published by Washington State University Press of Pullman, Washington.
More recently I've co-authored a work entitled Wyatt Earp and Coeur d'Alene
Gold, Stampede to Idaho Territory, Eagle City Publications, 1999. It took
four years of research for this second work and we are still diligently
looking for more information. (Incidentally, we had 2,175 book printed in
August of 1999 and ran out of books two weeks ago.)
In 1884, Eagle City was the first gold rush town in north Idaho's fabulous
Coeur d'Alene mining district and three miles to the east was/is
Murraysville its second. (Murraysville was later renamed Murray.) The site
of these north Idaho towns is on the north fork of the Coeur d'Alene River
just north of Interstate 90.
Now to the point…to date we have found only two photographs of Eagle City
and no city plat map which we know did exist. In preparation for the release
of this second book, we have gathered information from the obvious archives
like Universities in Idaho and surrounding states and the Idaho State
Historical Society. But, I wonder if anyone out there knows of any other
archive where we might find even more period information about Eagle City,
Murraysville or the Coeur d'Alenes?
Thanks for your time,
Jerry Dolph
