Hello fellow mining-history listers,
Just found out that my G Grandmother Mary BRIGGS was born in Whitelea,
Crook, County Durham in Dec 1846. As her father, Thomas, was listed as a
"Pitman" on the birth registration, I was hoping that there might be some
way to find information about the mines in the area.
In particular, it appears that a mine named Whitelea Drift was located
there. Might there be some records surviving that listed miners that worked
there? If so, where so? Or might there be a history of the Whitelea Drift
mine? Were there other mines in the area that my relatives might have
worked prior to 1849, when they emigrated to the USA? Unfortunately, I do
not know in which mine Thomas worked.
Thanks for any incite or help you can provide.
Cheers,
Fred Toewe
