A request for information from a non-member - can anyone help?
>I am currently undertaking research into 20th Century defence
infrastructure in Cumbria, and to this end, am trying to find out more about
the Camerton Fireclay and coal company, whose drift-mine was taken over by
the Admiralty to store munitions in 1940.
>
>The mine was previously owned by Thomas Mackay and co, and so far any work
I have consulted on the history of Camerton colliery only goes up to the
1930's, with information being scant beyond the turn of the century.
>
>Records in the Cumbria records office at Whitehaven and Carlisle don't show
anything beyond 1935-ish. The mine is sited at NGR NY 041 309, and is within
250 yards of the RNAD munitions dump at Broughton Moor, which was built at
the start of WWII around the (then disused) Buckhill colliery.
>
>Any information, or where to find information post-1940 would be much
appreciated, as would underground plans. There were three drifts, but I
think only one was used for munitions storage. There are some photographs
of the drift entrance which I took in 1981 and 1991 on my website at
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~rwbarnes/defence/camerton.htm
