Peter,
On the whole I agree that the maps on this site leave something to be desired.
For my purposes (locating particular sites and buildings which aren't shown on
smaller-scale maps) they are ideal, but I wouldn't like to try to use them to
carry out any kind of detailed survey. As regards dating, the date shown on the
black bar at the bottom of the screen changes from sheet to sheet, so I assume
that it's the year in which the sheet was published.
I've managed to get copies by saving the image to disk and then printing it
using MGI Photosuite which has the facility to fit the image to the paper size
on the print preview screen.
I've always found old OS maps to be something of a problem, since the copies
held in the various libraries in this area are limited in coverage, the sheets
for country areas generally being the most difficult to find. The only other
editions that I know of which are easily available are the David & Charles 1
inch reprints which cover the whole of England and Wales, but aren't of
particularly good quality, whilst the Alan Godfrey 1:2500 reprints are of very
good quality but only cover a fairly small selection of towns.
I suspect that we shall have to wait for computer technology to advance somewhat
before the presentation of high-definition maps on the internet becomes really
viable.
