These maps are the first edition 6 inch (1:10,560) series. However, when
you download them they come in at a much larger scale. I have reduced them
in PageMaker to around 23.8% to match later 6" sheets in my collection.
When reduced the image is quite sharp and readable.
Having downloaded large portions of the Forest of Dean it does have to be
said that the quality of the scanning is variable, it changes when you go
from one sheet to another. Also take care going over county boundaries . .
.
I would suggest that the east west compression resulted from placing the
GIF image into some other software in order to print out. I have had no
problems with distortions at all. Apart from over county boundaries . . .
