I was intrigued by this reference in Tony's posting. I am not aware of
any mining in or near Sidmouth but presume they are referring to the
tunnel behind the cliff to the east of the town which is left over from
an abortive attempt to build a harbour in 1836. It is about a third of a
mile long and runs parallel to the cliff face and, as the cliff
crumbles, will probably be opened up in time. It was flooded in the
early 1970s and not the healthiest of places. Best left unexplored.
