Bernard,
I cannot give a definitive statement in this at the moment as I'm in Truro
for the NAMHO conference but yes, they had an interest in Ogofau. One, Roman
Deep, was the holding company with British Goldfields as the operating
company. See George Hall's Metal Mines of Southern Wales, (2nd edn., 1993)
for more detail.
Re. Martin's message - The Crown lease was held by University of Wales,
Cardiff, although Anglesey probably had a hand in it and I understand they
have options on the surrounding areas. The National Trust are currently in
negotiations for the Crown lease of Ogofau. They own the freehold of the
site and hope to hold the lease with provision for Cardiff to continue their
field centre operations on site.
