You will find information on the use of canaries in "MINE GASES AND
VENTILATION" by James T. Beard, C.E., E.M.; Second Edition, 1920,
McGraw-Hill Book Company. Pages 106 to 108 describe the experiments by Dr.
J. S. Haldane on the use of canaries in gas detection. A reference given on
the subject, which I do not have access to, is "Trans. I.M.E., Vol. 38, pp.
267-280". You might also look at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Technical Paper
62.
